Hello. HIM student here. Would someone give me the Dummies version of what an API is and how it is applied in healthcare software? I've read a couple articles online but still need some clarity on this subject. THX!

    Hello Tonjia,

I just prepared an assignment for my students and found this website to be very helpful and in very clear manner they discuss API's and their applications in health care.

It contains short animations that really help with this concept.

    Hope it helps!

Thank you Debra. I got a "page not found 404 error" when trying to access the link. Could you re-post? Not sure if it's the link or an issue on my end.

    Hello,

    Try this one.

If you highlight the text and right-click it should work.

It worked! I appreciate your help understanding APIs better. It seems to me APIs help software programs communicate with each other. For example, the step tracker that is built into my iPhone communicates with the application I loaded on my phone to track health. Each is made by a different developer but the API is the "middleman" between the two.Not sure if that is close but I guess for now it is my rudimentary way of thinking about it. I've read a couple articles on hospital/EHR database security that suggest APIs will play an important role. Hopefully I am on the right track to understanding this concept better. Thank you Deborah!
