CDs given to patients with PHI...Encrypted?

For those providing CDs with copies of PHI to patients through the mail, generally, are you encrypting the data as a safeguard in the event the CD is lost or misdirected by the USPS?

Hi, we offer both options, however if the patients does not check off unencrypted we send it encrypted. We have a letter that contains the password and that is sent separately.

    Thanks,

    Karla

Thanks Karla.  On a related note...do you get many requests for ePHI to be provided to a patient on a USB drive?  I know USB drives are popular and relatively inexpensive...but I don't see these getting used much at all.  It seems CDs are the medium of choice between the two (CD or USB).

How does that compare with your experience?  Thanks!

No problem. We have some on hand just in case but we have provided maybe two over my span here. Very little. Right now we are trying to move away from CDs all together. We use email delivery as well as Ambra for diagnostic image sharing.

    Thanks,
