SBO due to cancer

CC 2nd Q 2017 page 12 says to code the secondary cancer only for a SBO due to mets.  If however, the patient comes in with a known SBO due to mets, and only the SBO is treated, (NG tube place). would the SBO then be the reason for admission?

No.  As you already noted, there's an excludes 1 note when we attempt to index a small bowel obstruction due to a known underlying condition.    That excludes 1 note would apply regardless of the the treatments being provided to the patient.   The treatments (i.e. focus of care) is more part of the "circumstances of admission" and plays a role in sequencing questions, but not so much in following index instructions to arrive at the specific code for a diagnosis.

Yes we need to code cancer as primary diagnosis and no need additional code for obstruction
