Inpatient Behavioral Health PCS Coding

    Hello,

I was curious what ICD-10 PCS codes other inpatient behavioral health facilities use for patients with some sort of psychotic or mood disorder - codes F20-F39. We will occasionally code for ECT, but I know there are codes for medication management and psychological testing.

What codes do your facilities use and under what circumstances/documentation?

    Thank you!

I am in a small, 72 beds, facility. We have a psych unit and a chemical dependency unit. Often the chemical dependency occurs with a mental health issue as well. But we do not use any PCS codes if the primary diagnosis is psych. We use the medication management codes for replacement medications for addiction.
I am curious as well as to what other places use PCS in their behavioural health facilities, other than ECT.

Hello, I work with several Psych hospital systems, I often see detox services as well as any rehab.  The Rehab would change the DRG. The Detox does not, however, it does paint a clear picture of what is happening.

in terms of other services, many are included in the inpatient stay and should not be reported separately. The provider may or may not be able to bill separately for professional services. That would be payer dependent.

Is your facility Dual diagnosis, or do you only treat psych?

    Thanks,

    Heather

The facility I work at does treat dual diagnosis, but there are also a handful of patients who come from correctional facilities or other facilities with no access to substances and do not abuse any substances.

I see under the Mental Health section of ICD-10 PCS there are codes for Psychological Tests and Medication Management. I was curious if any other facilities used these. Or if the treatment is all included in the diagnosis. When I asked about other procedure codes at my current facility when I first started working, the old director just said that was how we always did things, and I know things change. My new manager is new and doesn't have a lot of coding experience; so for my knowledge and other coders here after me I would like to gather as much information as possible.

    Thank you!

    Hello,

So you may have detox codes - and possibly Rehab (if you have that service).

Usually the services you listed are part of the overall payment. With that said, it may be worthwhile to check with individual  contracts to see if these are listed out separately. it may work out in your benefit.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I will be happy to help as I can.

    thanks,
