Bidirectional Authorization to Release Information

Hi everyone! Received this question and wanted some feedback about bidirectional ROI authorization where one form allows for both the sending and receiving of PHI from another specific facility/individual. This is appropriate, yes?  We have an outpatient center that includes psychology and they would like to use one ROI form and not two. Can't promise this auth would be accepted by another facility/individual, but I don't see an issue with this. Any thoughts? And thank you!

We use bidirectional.  I see no reason not to however sometimes it creates confusion.

    Example:

Auth to release information to or obtain from primary care doctor.  In HIM we are sometimes unsure if the intent is really for us to obtain primary care records or to release our mental health records, particularly when it is a new patient and there really isn't much documented yet.

    Deborah,
I am in LTC and use bi-directional authorization.  It works well for my purposes and I haven't had any problems with getting information from other sources.  I don't see an issue with you using it.

    Hey Deborah,

We use an authorization where there are two checkboxes:  1) SEND TO and 2) RECEIVE FROM.  The subsequent boxes provides the facility information that we will receive the records from/send the records to.  I designed the form that way to help alleviate the confusion from staff and patients when completing the form.

When a patient is completing the form in HIM, we use a separate patient request form that only works for one transaction.

    Hope this helps!
    Sincerely,
    Jesse
