ROI position for risk and legal requests

  • 1.  ROI position for risk and legal requests

    Posted 22 days ago

Our HIM Department wants to pursue creating a separate ROI position that will specifically handle legal requests and risk management requests. These requests tend to be the most complicated, require critical thinking skills and considerable amount of time. The new position would require an associates or RHIT or bachelors/RHIA preferred. Our current ROI clerk job description only requires a GED or high school diploma.

Has anyone created a specific ROI position to handle these types of requests or require that this position have an Associates or be credentialed or change their current job descriptions to require a degree/credentials ?

    Good morning,

This may not have all of the answers, but there is a Release of Information Toolkit (2013) that may be a good reference:

I have not recreated a position for the risk/legal requests but I like you thinking.   All positions in my HIM department require an associate degree in an HIM or HIM related field, as all the positions now require a considerable amount of critical thinking.   I would suggest review of all education requirements and/or job experience for your release of information staff.   I would suggest an RHIT or CHPS for the Risk and legal request.

    Hello,

yes, we have staff that were interviewed and selected to be part of the 'special task' service line we created for all requests we deem need more special care/attention. These include for our legal department, abuse cases (because they can contain sensitive records) insurance requests that we don't charge for, and requests asking for DRS items. This way, there is limited staff having to learn these extra steps and we can better keep track that the right information is sent.
we also have ROI specialist (entry level), ROI senior specialist, & ROI Sr Spec-special task.

My current facility is too small for a separate ROI position but my previous facility employed specialized ROI techs that only handled the Legal and RM request types. These employees were usually senior level staff who had been with the facility for some time and knew very well the legal ramifications. They were required to hold an RHIT or RHIA credential.

I can reach out to former colleagues and see if they are able/willing to send the job descriptions.

    Thanks,
