Immunization Retention Requirements

We are a Student Heath Center at a University in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Does anyone know if immunization records have a different retention period than other medical records?  We follow AHIMA guidelines of 10 years for medical record retention.  Nevada statutes indicate a 5 year retention for medical records.  Someone from another state has advised their understanding is that immunization records are to be kept indefinitely.  We are unable to locate this retention requirement in the Nevada statutes, or anywhere else for that matter.  Has anyone heard of this requirement for immunization records?  Where is the information posted?  Could this be an individual state requirement?  All input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much!

Your question is a few months old but I wanted to address it. I do not believe there is a nation-wide policy to retain immunization data indefinitely. I work for a state public health agency supporting the state IIS and there is no requirement in the state I work for health care organizations to submit immunization data to the state IIS registry. Each state has different requirements on immunization data. I would check your state retention guidelines on medical records or contact your state immunization IIS registry.
