Using Epic MyChart for minors

    Hello,
We are trying to find a way to use Epic's MyChart to have virtual/video visits with minors.  But our issue is trying to comply with state law that requires minor consent for those certain diagnoses (mental health, conditions of pregnancy, etc.) while not denying parental access to the information they have to see.

Has someone found a creative way to do this?  We are considering giving the minor the control of MyChart, but don't want to be in the position of information blocking to the parent.

I look forward to your ideas.  Thank you.

I am also interested in what others have to say on this topic. We use Meditech, but have the same questions and concerns regarding the use of the portal for virtual visits.

We do allow parental/guardian access to the minor patient's portal up until the age of 10, but then there is an 8 year gap before the patient can be a portal user again.

    Thanks for bringing this up.

Hello – we implemented Teen MyChart the end of 1st Quarter.  Minors 13-17 may have a MyChart account without specific parental/guardian permission.  Parents/Guardians may request proxy access without the minor permission.  We do not display confidential notes if the patient has identified those visits to be sensitive in line with MN statues related to minor privacy protections.  Implementation of Teen MyChart has allowed for minors to have integrated video visits; parents need to be present to give permission for the visit with the minor even if they are not present for the entire virtual visit.  We have cautiously increased some of the proxy view of information however we are still working through this very carefully to manage to parental rights of access, state statute, etc.

Can you tell me, Stephanie, is this a application your organization built for Epic?  We have not heard of Teen MyChart from Epic.  Thank you.
