Hey guys, I just signed up to take the CHPS certification. If anyone has taken it, is there any helpful study tips since there are no guides on the website?

    Thanks,

    Alexandra,

I purchased the Introduction to Health Information Privacy and Security Book from AHIMA and used that as a study guide.  It was most helpful along with HIPAA and HITECH regulations of course.   Security is the area that I personally needed a little more focus on, so I reviewed any and all references cited in the Introduction to Health Information Privacy and Security Book.

    Hope that helps...Good luck!

Thank you so much! I couldn't find the prep book when I was looking in the store initially. I just ordered it!

    Alexandra,

I used the AHIMA CHPS prep book ,  recommended AHIMA  book resources, and HHS.gov website. I  also used the exam content outline to guide my study , which is available on the AHIMA website.  Security was also the area I needed to focus on. Right before I took my exam I purchased some of the AHIMA CHPS test prep by domain for additional study and practice.  Good luck with your studies.

Hi - I too am interested in this discussion as I am considering re-taking the exam - except that I took it in 2011 and missed it by 9 points.  It was heavy in technology, which is what my downfall was, so I am interested to see if the exam is still tech-heavy.  Not talking about the security rule or processes - it was the technology behind following the regulations.  So much has changed in 9 years and the role of a privacy officer has grown, hence my interest in trying again, but if it takes an IT certificate to understand the questions, then I would not consider it.

    Lance and all ---

Back in 2016, when I was studying for the CHPS, I was part of an unofficial study group, and created some material. Here is one video that I created to cover Risk Management. Plus, an attachment of a Word document that has dates and other things to know.

Introduction to Information Risk Management in Healthcare - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuhBAMR1Rpw

I'll dig around to see what else I might have created.

As with any study material, always double check with the source.

Andrew...this is a wealth of information!

Quick question...is this written from the perspective of a health plan as a covered entity?  The reason I ask is as I was skimming this, I saw some info specific to a health plan which would not apply to say a doctor's office or hospital type of provider.  Just want to make sure I understand the context.

    Thanks again...nice collection of info.

The context was security risk in general to a covered entity, not specific to the type.

It's been a few years since I watched it, but I recall that most of the requirements were straight from the Security Rule, as you know, applicable to all types of CEs.

Very helpful to know the context.  So one thing people can do and this can turn into a very good exercise is to confirm the info in the grid with that context in mind that what is listed applies to covered entities in general.

With that in mind, this will help people confirm some of the info and also find some info that may need to be "adjusted" a bit.  Again...and let me be clear...very good info to start off.  Thanks for sharing Andrew!
