Continuing the discussion on the future service line decisions for 2019, I believe we should review the Data Analytics topic for future service line. As HIM professionals and SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS of managing data in the electronic health record we should allocate in depth review of
Data Management & Analytics and the health care analysis activities that can be undertaken as a result of data collected from many areas within healthcare; gathering, compiling, modeling, validating, and analyzing data of:

    • Claims and cost data
    • Research and development (R&D) data,
    • Clinical data (collected from electronic medical records (EHRs), diagnosis & procedure data (including codes)
    • Let's promote the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA®) certification and add further education in degree curriculums in database (SQL) data capture, data extraction/provisioning (EHR, Coding & Billing identifying diagnosis, procedures, charges, revenue), data analysis (evaluate, discovery/data mining, interpretation, presentation) and where competencies will be needed.

I volunteered with the HIMr work group & associates degree work group. This group really understands the need for the Data Analytics service line for the future!
