I am currently consulting with an organization who has years of microfiche they still access.  Anyone have some best practices they are willing to share to get rid of keeping these hard copy films?  thanks

My recommendation is they establish a retention period consistent with their state law and destroy anything prior to that date.....we did this until all microfiche was gone.....

Thanks Wendy. I failed to mention this is a children's hospital that does extensive research so they are not interested in destroying.

Shelia,

Have you looked into converting the micro fiche to a digital format? A number of years ago a community critical access hospital I worked for converted all of their micro fiche records to CD format. We worked with a company that did the conversion for us. I'm sure there are other digital formats that the data could be converted to since CDs are not readily used much anymore. At my current organization CD usage is disabled unless you have a business need for an application that is run via CD. I did a quick Google search on 'convert microfiche to digital format' and many entries came up.

Warm Regards,

Thank you Sarah!  I am just beginning my research and appreciate your response. I also googled microfiche to digital and found a few companies that specialize in that technology.  I will continue to research.
