We have been discussing with our CDI team whether we can code the T51.0x1A 9 toxic effect of alcohol when we only have the documented dx of toxic encephalopathy due to alcohol intoxication.  I agree this documentation would allow us to code the G92 toxic encephalopathy and there is a code first note in the index to identify the toxic agent.  However does this documentation support the use of the poisoning (toxic effect) code for the alcohol ?  Or do we also need documentation to support the T51.0x1A such as alcohol poisoning, etc?

The toxic encephalopathy is due to alcohol. At G92 is a Code first instruction for the toxic agent.  Assign both codes and sequence the T51 code first.
