Yearly Oncology consult: assessment states patient has several types of cancer that are in remission.  However R breast cancer after radiation the patient is being treated with an aromatase inhibitor for five years.  No mention of remission.  Do can I use the active cancer code or history of  in her family practice chart?

    Hello,
I hope this article is helpful to you.  It really doesn't state specifically the answer to your question, but might help you decide which way to go with this.

If the AI was ordered as part of adjuvant therapy (treatment), I'd code as active until all treatment has ended.

    Hello!

Please see Coding Clinic, 3rd QTR 2009, pages 3 - 4.  The advice concerns adjuvant treatment with Herceptin, but I am pretty sure would also apply to aromatase therapy,  Assign the current active breast cancer code with a long-term medication code.  The same applies to prostate cancer treated with adjuvant therapy.  I would imagine any cancer being treated with adjuvant therapy.
