    ​Good morning,
    As an upcoming graduate of an HIM program, I'm looking for thoughts  on a career path. I am interested in ROI and wondering about pros/ cons of the field.

    I love ROI.   The part that appeals to me is that it is something of a niche and you can be the expert.   The flip side of that is that you limit future job opportunities if you go completely ROI.   If you decide to go that direction, it is a good idea to keep yourself active in other aspects of HIM if you can so that you have more diversity.

    I started with ROI and eventually it lead to analyzing charts, then coding,  and now a manager. There isn't a problem with starting with ROI,  especially if this is your first hospital job. I think it is a good starting point for anyone in HIM.

    ROI is a great area to get into and offers opportunities as with all other areas within HIM.  When I look at ROI, the staff must be experts in both state and federal laws re: privacy and security of PHI.  They become well versed in the requirements of both CMS and payer quality of care audits. They can also serve as the go-to person with questions re: confidentiality of PHI.  There are so many opportunities to streamline the receipt and disclosure of PHI - much of which is still not quite mastered.

    Adding to this is a new area of opportunity is record retrieval which has historically been performed within the clinical areas (and oftentimes by nursing staff).  What better people to perform this function than those who have already established relationships with other healthcare organizations through ROI!

    As you can see, I absolutely love ROI and do not see this as a foot in the door position.  With a creative mind, there are many opportunities to improve services for our patients.

    Hi Thomas! ROI is a great place to get your foot in the door and learn about HIM in a practical sense. I have worked in HIM for 3 years, while working to finish my bachelors degree. That said, unless you're planning on moving up into management or training, ROI can be quite repetitive and dull after awhile, and it is a very entry-level type job.

    I work for a large health system's HIM department, with an ROI team of about 25 people. The job does not require any AHIMA credentials, and a degree is merely preferred except for leads/supervisor/manager. In three years, only one person on that team has been credentialed with AHIMA and stayed. She is close to retirement age and no longer wants the stress of a director's job. The individuals who come onto the team with a credential or close to obtaining it, do so as a launching pad for other HIM careers. Once they obtain the credential, they quickly move on to coding, IT, or supervisory/training roles. My current manager has made a niche for herself in ROI, albeit it wasn't her goal or intent.

    All in all, it's not a terrible role, and it offers a lot in experience and learning. It's just not an area with a lot of long-tern growth potential within that particular niche. Get into it if you can, but don't expect a career in ROI.

    I would suggest doing it or any job in HIM to get foot in the door.  The sad thing is they mostly want everyone someone with experience and they don't realize we all had to start somewhere and grow.  I am a Coordinator over ROI.  ROI has not been my favorite section of HIM.  I have grown to like it and learn everyday.  Good luck.

    ​ROI is an exciting part of HIM.  It's an area where in health care laws, fed and state rules and regs, and compliance intersect.  I don't consider it as a foot in the door.  My various roles actually pulled me into it as HIM skills and knowledge were needed to run this unit.  I found myself developing P&Ps, training staff, collaborating with other departments (patient advocate, risk management, counsel, etc), coordinating with third party payers, auditors, reviewers, making certain new access laws are implemented, generating and analyzing reports, sponsoring a department project, a great deal of innovating, etc.  It is enriching me as an HIM professional, and is pushing me to learn more about the industry.
    The credential (RHIT at a minimum) demonstrates knowledge and competencies so it is important for an organization to have a person who has it to oversee the unit.  It comes in handy when you deal with upper leadership.
    There are many potential employers aside from HC organizations such as software companies, ROI vendors/providers, consulting, law offices, insurance companies.  Good luck on your journey.
