    Hello, everyone

I am a HIM Student in Rochester, NY. I will be graduating in the Spring and sitting for the RHIT Exam. I am an older student with 10+ years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. I have a BA in Mathematics. I would like to at least explore one of the more technical areas of  HIM, such as Informatics or Analytics. I have taken a semester of Excel and am currently taking a course in Access. My question is:
I could potentially add a course to my schedule next semester. Would I be better off taking Statistics or another course in Excel? or
Would you suggest another use for my efforts (like studying for the RHIT)?
Thanks for any wisdom/experience you have to offer.

My advice is dependent on whether you love numbers (statistics) or informatics if your a techie.  Personally I see the biggest demand is for CDI which means you need to be well versed in Coding.  BTW everyone wants you to have 2 years experience before they hire you, (catch 22). I was not interested in coding, I can do it just don't want to do it for a living. CDI and coding seems to be in high demand everywhere I go. I'm an auditor and travel all over the US and love it. There are a lot of options out there, but you need  to just know what you want to do before you graduate. Plan on at least 6 months after you get your RHIT before jobs start looking at you. Good Luck

Thank you for your response and valuable input. I have had to complete the program on a part-time basis due to family obligations, so it will be necessary to do a thorough review of all the coding rules for the RHIT. Any advice on getting myself back up to speed?

    Thank you.
    Debbie
