I am hoping that some of you with CHPS certification can help me. I am considering obtaining the certification and wonder if you could tell me how it has helped you in your career.

Also, which study guide/prep manual do you recommend as there are several offered on AHIMA.

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond.

Being I am the Privacy Officer, it was a requirement for my position to get certified.  I actually just recently took it and found it to be a lot harder than expected.  My work is more privacy focused, than security, so the security questions tripped me up a bit.  I used the Exam Prep book through AHIMA.  After going through that numerous times, I felt ready for the test.  However, if I were to do it again, I wouldn't use that resource alone in the future because the questions weren't similar at all, in my opinion.

    Good luck!

    Kristin,
Privacy and Security is intertwined with everything we do.  It is hard for me to just one or two specific examples of how certification helps.  AHIMA periodically offers a CHPS workshop which I found to be very helpful.  (I think I read that the next one is scheduled for January in Long Beach, CA.)
I noticed that you are from North Carolina.  I have a dear friend in Greensboro who recommended Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) Exam Preparation by Danika E. Brinda.  I found the prep book to be incredibly helpful.  The test is not an exact replica of the questions, but if you have a good understanding of the questions and terminology, I think you will find the prep book to be a helpful tool as well.  Study well.  It is tough to find anyone who thinks the CHPS exam is easy.
Good luck from your neighbor in Virginia!!!

    Kristin,

I took the exam nearly 10 years ago and there was little prep material available.  A group of us in the Kansas City area formed a study group and met frequently to review and discuss the materials we gathered on our own, based on the certification materials provided at the time.

So I can't recommend which AHIMA materials to use (however, grateful that there are so many more resources and exam prep experiences available now). But I can recommend the group study experience over a period of time to review and discuss the materials.

Concerning the security questions, we had a member of our study group who was an expert in IT security and I can not emphasize how much that helped the group. The majority of the group were steeped in privacy and we also struggled with the security side of the exam.   If you can seek out someone with that expertise to assist you as you study I would highly recommend it.  We had a 90% pass rate and our IT security member played a big part in helping us pass!

    Good luck!

    Dana

I took the test before there were study guides.  I studied the rule in detail and the FAQs on HHS website.  I also read through corrective action plans.

Having the certification has allowed me to advance my career into the compliance in general.

    Good luck!
