    Hello,

    I recently took a job as the HIM/Referrals Supervisor at a mid-size physician clinic. My background is in hospital and SNF settings, so I'm still figuring out the outpatient clinic setting. The department has gone through a period of some neglect and part of what I've been tasked with by my manager is updating workflows and revitalizing the department. My assessment is that HIM is being underutilized - they do very little more than scanning/importing records into the EHR. There are currently no processes for analysis, deficiency management, or CDI, and ROI is outsourced to a vendor. I would really like to connect with other HIM professionals who work in a clinic setting, especially a community health center or FQHC, to find out what responsibilities your departments have, productivity measures you track, and advice about how to build interdepartmental alliances to bring about process change.

    Good morning,

    I am the Health Information and Compliance Manager at a FQHC in Reno, NV. I took over the dept 2 years ago and the dept was spread across 6 health centers. I centralized the department, created more policies and protocols, revised older policies and protocols. We currently use a rather archaic EMR (MicroMD by Henry Schein) that makes metrics / reports challenging to pull from our system. I created logs for the teams to track time spent and realized that within one business day a team of 5 completed 151 hours of work. Made sense we were always playing catch up. I was able to secure a budget that expanded my team to 6 FTE's, a Lead and 2 per diems to help play catch up and tackle our paper charts/record retention. We do ALOT of things in house, more than any of our peers in the area. We are bringing a new EHR on at the end of Q3 this year, so we will continue to plan for that and see how processes need to change. I am happy to have you contact me if you need anything.
